Case of the Day: Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome

In today’s case, we present a minor patient in whom Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome is observed. This is a rare condition that primarily affects blood vessels, soft tissues, and, in some cases, the bones of a limb. It is characterized by the presence of three main findings: “port-wine” stains on the skin, visible varicose or abnormal veins, and excessive tissue growth in the affected area.

What causes this condition?

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome is congenital in nature, meaning it is present from birth. It is associated with abnormalities in the development of blood vessels during pregnancy. These abnormalities cause some deep veins to function improperly or create abnormal connections between superficial and deep veins. Therefore, even if only stains or varicose veins are visible on the surface, the underlying problem may lie in deeper venous structures.

The symptoms of this syndrome include:

  • Reddish or purplish skin stains
  • Visible varicose veins from an early age
  • Swelling or enlargement of the affected limb
  • A feeling of heaviness or pain in the leg

Keep in mind that in some cases, symptoms may vary, so it is important to consult a specialist in the circulatory system. In Peru, the specialist physician is the cardiovascular surgeon.

Is there a treatment for Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome?

Currently, there is no cure for this condition; however, there are treatments that help control symptoms and prevent complications, thereby improving the patient’s quality of life.
