Patient with Advanced Varicose Veins and Doppler Ultrasound Evaluation
In today’s case, we have a patient who visited the Cardiovascular Surgeon for consultation. After a physical examination, a Doppler ultrasound was performed to allow for an advanced diagnosis and to provide a specific treatment for varicose veins.
In this case, the evaluation revealed the presence of a perforating vein originating from the thigh, which causes upward reflux, leading to varicose branches in the inner third of the thigh. This reflux affects the great saphenous vein at the knee segment, which in turn produces reverse blood flow back toward the ankle, resulting in visible varicose branches.
Why do we use Doppler ultrasound?
This diagnostic tool is essential because it allows us to identify the vein that is causing the varicose veins and determine which one needs to be treated with the most urgency.
It is very important to consult a varicose vein specialist, which in Peru is the Cardiovascular Surgeon. This is the medical professional with the most in-depth knowledge of both the circulatory system and the surgical procedures needed to treat it.
