Patient with Thrombophlebitis Due to Untreated Varicose Veins
Today we are seeing a patient who came to us with a complication known as thrombophlebitis. The patient had varicose vein bulges that she did not treat in time, and as a result, they have become thrombosed. Her legs appear hardened, with pain upon palpation, and she reports that while she was sleeping, the varicose veins began to cause intense pain.
Thrombophlebitis is a venous inflammation accompanied by the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) inside the vein. This condition can occur in superficial veins (superficial thrombophlebitis) or in deep veins (deep vein thrombosis).
Why treat varicose veins in time?
It is very important to see a vein specialist – in Peru, a Cardiovascular Surgeon – to treat varicose veins in a timely manner and prevent serious complications, discomfort, and pain. In this case, it was a superficial thrombosis, but it could progress to deep vein thrombosis, which in turn could lead to a pulmonary thromboembolism when a clot from the leg travels to the lungs and causes a pulmonary infarction.
So now you know see your specialist, the Cardiovascular Surgeon, who will evaluate you and provide the appropriate treatment using Doppler ultrasound and expert knowledge of the venous system.
And remember, in Peru you can count on Dr. Paulo Huachalla Coronel, who is considered by many patients and colleagues as the best Cardiovascular Surgeon in Lima. Don’t hesitate to contact us, we are here for you.
