Case of the Day – Patient with Varicose Veins for 15 Years
In today’s case, Dr. Paulo Huachalla Coronel, Cardiovascular Surgeon in Lima, presents a patient who came in for a consultation after suffering from the discomfort of venous disease for 15 years.
The Patient’s Physical Evaluation
During the physical examination, the patient showed varicose veins around the ankle and visibly dilated varicose branches in the right calf.
The patient underwent a Doppler ultrasound to determine the origin of the varicose veins. In this case, the issue originated from the great saphenous vein, which presented valve failure. Instead of flowing upward, the blood was flowing backward, leading to the formation of varicose veins.
Additionally, it was found that a varicose branch surrounding the leg had affected the trunk of the small saphenous vein, which in turn impacted the lower veins around the ankles. This highlights the importance of evaluation by a varicose vein specialist and the use of venous Doppler ultrasound to accurately diagnose the affected veins and provide the optimal treatment tailored to each patient’s specific case.
