Why Sclerotherapy Is Not Suitable for All Types of Varicose Veins
We recently had a patient visit our clinic with severe and highly dilated varicose veins in both legs. This patient had previously undergone sclerotherapy, which involves injecting a solution into the veins. However, within a short time—less than a year—the varicose veins returned as if no treatment had been performed.
As we have explained in various videos and articles, sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for varicose veins, but it is not suitable for all types. In this patient’s case, the issue arose because the clinics where he was previously treated did not perform a thorough evaluation using venous Doppler ultrasound.
The Importance of a Proper Diagnosis
Due to an incorrect diagnosis, the root cause of the varicose veins was not treated. The issue originated in the trunk of the great saphenous vein, which was diseased and had incompetent valves—something that can only be detected through Doppler ultrasound imaging.
For this reason, doctors recommend that patients undergo comprehensive treatment, addressing both the trunk and the branches, which form the visible varicose veins. This makes evaluation by a varicose vein specialist—specifically a Cardiovascular Surgeon—essential. A specialist will provide a complete diagnosis and the most effective treatment.
